Sheriff Darren Campbell stated: On Friday, June 12, 2020, Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Deputy K. Sherard was dispatched to Westscott Drive in reference to a suspicious person.
When Deputy Sherard arrived on the scene, he observed saw a white male walking on Westscott Drive, which matched the description of the suspicious person. Deputy Sherard made contact with the male who was identified as Matthew Cole Chapman of Mocksville. A search of Chapman located a semi-automatic handgun magazine. When asked about the magazine, Chapman denied knowledge of it.
Lt. D. Christian and Deputy Graves arrived to assist in the investigation. Deputy Graves said Chapman was searched earlier at a scene where his wife was found to be unresponsive in an automobile. Chapman did not have the magazine on him at the time.
The deputies searched the area and located a holster, bullets and a cellular telephone. After questioning Chapman about these items, he admitted he had gone to a home somewhere on Westscott looking his wife. After additional questioning, Chapman admitted to having a gun. Canine “Jaag” was called for to assist in locating the handgun. After a brief time searching, the gun was located.
The residence, and vehicle, which the gun was stolen from was located. The deputies made contact with the owner and a report was taken.
Based upon all of the information gathered throughout this investigation, Matthew Cole Chapman was arrested, and taken to the Iredell County Detention Center. Chapman was charged with; Felony Second Degree Burglary, Felony Larceny, Felony Breaking and Entering of a Motor Vehicle, Felony Larceny of a Firearm, Felony Possession of Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Misdemeanor Larceny.
