[ARCHIVED] Convicted Felon charged with Felony Assault.

Sheriff Darren Campbell stated: On Wednesday, May 27, 2020, Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a residence on Mt. Ulla Highway for a reported assault.

When the deputies arrived, they learned the victim had been assaulted at a residence on Brumley Road and then brought to the Mt. Ulla Highway address by neighbors. The victim said a family member, Cody Lee Choate, was the person who had assaulted her. The victim told detectives who interviewed her, Choate was upset about money and wanted her debit card. When she refused to give him the debit card, the suspect picked up a guitar and began to beat her until she told him where the debit card was located. Once the victim told Choate where the debit card was, he stopped hitting her with the guitar to retrieve the card. At this time the victim was able to run out of the residence, however Choate chased after her and tackled her in the yard where he continued to beat her in the face and chest with his fists. The injuries the victim sustained were serious but non-life threatening.

Deputies and detectives gathered statements from the victim, and several witnesses. Based upon all of the evidence gathered throughout the investigation, detectives were able to obtain arrest warrants on Cody Lee Choate for Felony Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon and Felony Assault Inflicting Serious Injury.

On Thursday, May 28, 2020, deputies were able to locate and arrest Cody Lee Choate at his residence without incident. He was then transported to the Iredell County Detention Center where he was served with the arrest warrants, and given a 30,000.00-dollar secure bond by Magistrate D. Chambers.
