[ARCHIVED] Suspect charged with multiple felonies from Burglary investigation.

Sheriff Darren Campbell stated: In the early morning hours of Thursday, December 26, 2019 the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office received an assault call. The victim had driven to Sheetz on Wilkesboro Highway. Several witnesses noticed the condition of victim who had serious injuries to his head and face. Iredell County EMS responded to attend to the victim. 

Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Deputies were called to the scene, where they were able to determine the assault had taken place at the victim’s residence on Calico Lane.

The victim told deputies he was asleep in his bed when he heard someone in his room. He sat up, and when he did there was a masked man standing in the door way of the bedroom. The suspect demanded money and guns. When the victim did not comply the suspect sprayed him with mace and threatened to shoot him. The suspect then demanded the keys to the victim’s safe, and the victim then complied.

While the suspect was bent over trying to get into the safe the victim tried to escape.  The suspect began hitting the victim in the head and face. The suspect then forced the victim leave the home, using the victim’s truck, they went to several ATM’s in the Statesville area attempting to withdrawal money.

The suspect then got out of the truck at the Dollar General Store on Wilkesboro Highway. Before leaving the suspect told the victim he would be back tomorrow for the money and guns. The victim was then able to drive himself to Sheetz and get help. The victim was treated at a local hospital and was later transported to North Carolina Baptist Hospital due to the head injuries. 

During the course of the investigation the victim was able to provide detectives with details about the suspect. Evidence located at the crime scene along with other evidence collected in the vehicle led detectives to identify Lucas Bryan Coulbourn as a possible suspect.  Lucas Coulbourn is known to the family and has been in the victim’s home numerous times in the past.

Detectives were able to collect items of evidence and identify the vehicle the suspect fled the area in.

Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Detectives were able to obtain arrest warrants on Lucas Bryan Coulbourn for First Degree Burglary, First Degree Kidnapping, Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon Inflicting Serious Injuries, and Two Counts of Felony Safe Cracking. Detectives arrested the suspect at his home in Hickory North Carolina without incident. 

Lucas Bryan Coulbourn was taken to the Iredell County Detention Center where he was served with the warrants. He appeared before Magistrate M. Nethken who issued a No Bond for the charges. 

Sheriff Campbell added, “Due to the extremely violent nature of this incident, detectives worked this case aggressively, executing search warrants, and traveling to other counties to locate and arrest this suspect. I am proud of their hard work to be able to arrest this suspect”.

Criminal history: Misdemeanor Shoplifting by Concealing Goods, Misdemeanor Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Two Counts of No Operators License, Six Counts of Driving While License Revoked, Reckless Driving to Endanger.
