[ARCHIVED] Landfill Ban on Pallets

Enacted in 2005, House Bill 1465 prohibits the disposal of wooden pallets in North Carolina landfills.

It is unlawful to place into the landfill any material banned from landfills by the State of North Carolina or the County.

Pallets must be segregated, free of waste, unpainted, and are required to be recycled in the pallet recycling area.

Pallets must not be intentionally damaged, altered or rendered unfit for recycling for purposes of avoiding this requirement.

Penalties for non-compliant loads include a $35 handling fee if the Solid Waste staff is required to separate and move any material, one written warning, assessment of 3x the tipping fee for the second violation, or refusal of non-compliant loads.

For more information, contact Iredell County Solid Waste at (704) 878-5430.
