Sheriff Darren Campbell stated that on 7-17-15 Lt. C.L. Stone of the Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team conducted a traffic stop on a 2004 Nissan Altima on Oakland Ave. in Statesville due to an equipment violation. Stone spoke to the driver, Sara Hamby, and advised her of the violation. Stone also noticed that her passenger, Michael Light, appeared to be extremely nervous. Light advised Stone that his name was Miguel Luz. Stone checked the name, but was unable to locate anything. When Sgt. R.T. Sherrill arrived to assist a search was conducted. Light was then found to be in possession of a crack pipe and Hamby was found to be in possession of a syringe which she stated she uses for injecting roxycodone. A search of the vehicle resulted in locating items stolen from Aldi, Wal-Mart, and Save-A-Lot earlier in the day. Light also had a felony probation violation. Light was charged with 3 counts of larceny, possession of drug paraphernalia, and giving fictitious information to a law enforcement officer. Hamby was charged with 3 counts of Aid & Abet Larceny and possession of drug paraphernalia.
