Sherriff Darren Campbell stated: On Thursday August 30, 2018, deputies with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a possible carjacking on the northbound entrance ramp of Langtree Road at Interstate 77. A witness who was following the suspect vehicle gave the location and description of the suspect. Deputies and detectives responded and located the suspect within minutes on Bridges Farm Road near Mooresville, and took him into custody.

Additional deputies and detectives responded and learned the incident actually stemmed from a minor traffic accident. A vehicle operated by the female victim was struck in the rear by the suspect, Omar Anthony Coleman. As the female attempted to phone 911 to report the accident, Coleman asked her not to call the police because he had outstanding warrants. The female refused, and Coleman assaulted her and took her cell phone out of her. Coleman then took the phone and got back into his vehicle.

Several eyewitnesses stopped to help the female and tried to block Coleman’s vehicle, however he put the vehicle in reverse and moved with the female still partially in his driver’s door. The female’s seven year old son got out of her vehicle and ran toward his mother. Coleman struck the victim, her child and an eyewitness with his vehicle and drove away.

Iredell County EMS responded and treated the mother and child for minor injuries. They were then taken a local medical facility for evaluation. Deputies and detectives interviewed multiple eye witnesses and processed other evidence.

Based on eye witness interviews and additional evidence gathered from this investigation, Omar Anthony Coleman of Mooresville was arrested and charged with: Three counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Common Law Robbery and Interfering with 911 Communications. Coleman was transported to Iredell County Detention Center and taken before Magistrate P. Tutterrow who issued 25,000.00 dollars secured bond on these charges. Coleman was also served with an outstanding Order for Arrest for failure to appear on a drug possession charge. He was given a 1,000.00 dollars secure bond for this charge.
