Sheriff Darren E. Campbell stated: On Tuesday November 14, 2017 at approximately 4:00 pm, members of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Interstate Criminal Enforcement (ICE) Team and members of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office Highway Interdiction Team (HIT) were conducting criminal interdiction on Interstate I- 77 in Northern Iredell County as part of Operation Tarheel Gauntlet.
Iredell County Sheriff’s Office ICE Team deputies noticed individuals exchanging packages between four vehicles at a business just off of the interstate. When the subjects noticed the uniformed deputy, they quickly exited the business at a high rate of speed. Two vehicles went I-77 North and two went I-77 South. Due to having numerous deputies on the interstate all four vehicles were stopped a short time later.
While speaking with the drivers of the vehicles, a canine was utilized and indicated positively on all of the vehicles of the presence for illegal drugs. Deputies then searched the vehicles and located numerous items of evidence.
In one of the vehicles a large box was located and inside the box, several containers were easily identified as containing methamphetamine. In another vehicle a backpack was located and inside it were numerous bundles of US Currency. In another car, a brown paper bag was located under the seats with several bundles of US Currency in it also.
The individuals were detained and transported to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Narcotics Investigation Unit where all were questioned by investigators.
In all over 28 pounds of Methamphetamine worth 5,189,184 dollars, over 100,000.00 dollars of US Currency and four vehicles were seized as a result of these stops.
