Sheriff Darren Campbell stated On January 20, 2017, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office received an incident report of Financial Card Theft and Identity Theft. Detective Sgt. Fortson with the Economic Crime Unit was assigned the case.
According to the incident report the victim lost his debit card after leaving Galaxy Food in Stony Point. During the investigation and after obtaining video surveillance it was determined that the victim left his debit card in the chip reader and the offender, who checked out behind him, removed and concealed the card on her person. The offender, who was identified as Adaira Anne Smith then went to the Walmart in Taylorsville along with the second suspect, Cynthia Diane Hayes, and made a purchase of $113.42. Hayes then went next door and made two purchases with the stolen card at the Dollar Tree for $17.74 and $3.21. She also made a purchase at the ABC store of $64.15 and then she made a final purchase at Food Lion for $77.13. Adaira Anne Smith was charged with Financial Card Theft for stealing the card and Identity Theft for the use of the card at Walmart. She is currently confined at the Iredell County Jail on a $5,500.00 secured bond. Cynthia Diane Hayes was charged with Identity Theft for the use of the card at the Dollar Tree, ABC store and Food Lion. She was also confined on a $5,000.00 secured bond. Hayes has an extensive criminal history including simple worthless check, assault and drug charges and is currently on probation in Alexander County. Smith has a criminal history as well consisting primarily of various assault charges
