Sheriff Darren Campbell stated that Cornelia Baker befriended the victim in this case while working with them. Baker convinced the victim that they had done something unintentional to harm someone and that the person was now in the hospital. Baker convinced the victim that they would go to jail if they did not give money to pay for the medical bills. This eventually turned into I’m going to tell on you if you don’t give me the money. Baker extorted approximately $15,000.00 from the victim over a six month period.
On Saturday, June 4, 2016, Baker was arrested and charged with extortion. Baker was given a $20,000.00 secured bond by Magistrate Hollar. Baker was given a first appearance court date of June 6, 2016. Baker has been convicted in the past of DWI and Driving While Licensed Revoked.
