Sheriff Darren Campbell stated on April 20th, 2016 Deputies and Detectives responded to a reported shooting incident at 670 Murdock road, Troutman. Upon arrival Deputies spoke with the victim who stated that when he arrived home he noticed that a window was broken out in his home. The victim stated that he continued on into his house and once inside heard a man’s voice make a threat towards him. The victim stated that he turned and ran from the house and heard a shot as he ran away. The victim was able to go to a nearby location and call for help, however he left the vehicle he was driving running in the driveway.
When Deputies arrived at the scene the victim’s vehicle and suspects were gone. Detectives and Crime Scene personnel arrived on scene to assist in the investigation. During the investigation at the scene evidence was located that indicated a shooting had occurred along with what appeared to be evidence that a bullet had grazed the victim’s arm. In addition the home had video surveillance and the footage was collected as evidence.
In addition to the evidence of burglary and shooting a small amount of Marijuana and Drug Paraphernalia were located in the home. Detectives continued the investigation including recovering the stolen vehicle at a location in South Statesville. The vehicle was also processed for evidence prior to be released to the owner. Soon after Detectives were able to identify suspects from the surveillance video at the home.
Based on the totality of all the evidence warrants were issued for Derrick Rashad Howell and Brenton Terrail McCain for Felony Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to kill, 2nd degree Burglary and Felony Larceny of Motor Vehicle. Both men received 100,000 dollar bond.
McCain had prior convictions for Disorderly Conduct, Felony larceny after Breaking and Entering, Felony Breaking and Entering, Felony Probation Violation, Resisting Public Officer, Assault on Female, Felony Possession with Intent to Sale and Deliver Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia
Howell had prior convictions for Misdemeanor Larceny, Breaking and Entering, Probation violation, and Felony Breaking and Entering.
