Sheriff Darren Campbell stated: On April 5, 2015 at 10:32 pm Deputy Patrick Irwin was dispatched to a 911 hang up call on Hightower Ct Mooresville. Communications advised Deputy Irwin that a female had called 911 stating that her boyfriend, Mark Andrew Schaaf, and she were in a verbal altercation and that he had assaulted her and then the call was disconnected. When Deputies arrived on Hightower Ct, they were met in the roadway by a Green Toyota Avalon with a male in the driver seat and a female in the roadway approaching their patrol cars. The female who approached Deputy Irwin advised him that the driver of the vehicle was Mark Andrew Schaaf and she was the one who called. The female, a Samantha Jane Maurizio, told Deputies that Mr. Schaaf pushed her into his vehicle and then began to drive away. Ms. Maurizio stated that she was partially hanging out of the vehicle while Mr. Schaaf was driving away. Ms. Maurizio also stated that Mr. Schaaf had pulled her hair multiple times and grabbed her arm then grabbed her cell phone out of her hand while she was on the phone with 911 and he had then hung up the phone. A witness on the scene stated that he saw Mr. Schaaf grab Ms. Maurizio by the arm and push her around in the vehicle. Deputy Irwin also learned from speaking with Mr. Schaaf that he was already on probation and out on bond for charge of assault by strangulation which was also a domestic violence incident. With Ms. Maurizio’s and the witness’ statement, Deputies then placed Mr. Schaaf under arrest for assault on a female and interfering with emergency communications and he was then transported to the Iredell County Jail and brought before Magistrate Nicholson where he was held with no bond.
