Sheriff Darren Campbell stated: On Monday, November 13, 2023 at approximately 2:30 am, Iredell County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the emergency room of Iredell Memorial Hospital for an elderly female victim of an assault. When deputies arrived, they learned that she had been brought to the hospital by her husband, Clarence Tyson. Emergency lifesaving efforts were attempted by medical staff, but the victim, Rebecca Tyson, 68 years old, succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased.
After speaking with Clarence Tyson, deputies learned a domestic altercation had taken place at their home. Deputies then responded to 141 West Iredell Circle, Statesville, to secure the residence as a crime scene.
Homicide Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators responded to begin their investigation. Detectives collected evidence, interviewed witnesses and the husband, Clarence Tyson. Detectives obtained evidence from the investigation which showed Clarence Tyson had brutally assaulted his wife at their residence. When Clarence Tyson found his wife was non-responsive he transported her to the hospital where life saving measures weren’t enough and she succumbed to her injuries.
On the morning of Tuesday, November 14, 2023, an autopsy was completed by the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office. The results of the autopsy showed Rebecca Tyson’s cause of death was strangulation. Rebecca Tyson also had other severe injuries from assault which included several broken bones and severe bruising. After determining the cause of death, Detectives charged Clarence Edward Tyson with First Degree Murder. Tyson was taken before Magistrate Imes charged with First Degree Murder. Clarence Tyson is currently being held under No Bond.
