Sheriff Darren Campbell stated: On Tuesday, September 28, 2021, a call was received by the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office in reference to a victim with a possible stab wound. The injured person was reported to be in a wooded area between Zurich Lane and Fort Dobbs Road, north of Statesville.

A Medical First Responder was the first person to locate the victim, who was later identified as Dustin Jay Tilley.   While the responder was attempting to speak with Tilley and attempt to access the victim’s injury, Tilley got up, and threated to kill the responder if he did not stop talking on the radio, and then walked off.

The first responder followed Tilley while notifying the responding deputies on the direction was walking when Tilley turned and lunged with a knife at the responder. Tilley then turned and began running through the woods towards his residence on Fort Dobbs Road.

Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol Deputies, and detectives arrived on scene where they quickly established a perimeter to employ a canine to track Tilley. Deputy N. Hodges and his canine partner “Levi” tracked Tilley to his residence in the one hundred block of Fort Dobbs Road. A witness contacted the deputies to notify them of his location. When Tilley heard this he threatened to kill her because he did not want to go back to jail.

Detectives arrived on scene, as Tilley entered his residence. A family member of Tilley’s attempted to detain him, however he was unsuccessful. Deputy C. Caul deployed his Taser on Tilley. After the Taser was deployed, Tilley was taken into custody without further struggle. Iredell County EMS personnel assessed Tilley for his stab wound, which he stated was self-inflicted. Tilley was then transported to Iredell Memorial Hospital to be treated for his injuries.
