Sherriff Darren Campbell stated: On Tuesday, July 20, 2021, Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Road Patrol Deputies were notified about an abandoned vehicle, in the middle of a field on Mullis Road, in the northern area of Iredell County. When the deputies attempted to make contact with the owner’s to find out why the vehicle was in this location, the owner stated they were out of town on vacation, and the vehicle should be at the residence.
A neighbor of the victim was notified, and went to check the residence in Mooresville. They discovered the home had been broken into, and heavily damaged.
Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Property Crimes Investigators, along with Crime Scene Investigators met with the home owners at the residence to conduct an investigation and process the scene. An inventory of property discovered stolen was also obtained from the property owners. It was also determined, two other vehicles had been stolen from the residence. The vehicles were entered as stolen into several law enforcement data bases. Information on the stolen vehicles was also sent out to law enforcement agencies in the surrounding counties.
Within hours, Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Deputy D. Ashley located and conducted a traffic stop on one of the stolen vehicles. The driver, who was 17 years old, was detained while the vehicle was seized for processing. The juvenile driver was identified and transported to the sheriff’s office to be released to a parent.
A short time later, Patrol Officers with the Winston-Salem Police Department located the second stolen vehicle. While attempting to stop the vehicle, the driver, and other occupants fled the scene. A perimeter was established. The Winston-Salem Police Department was able identify the driver, and recover the vehicle.
As the investigation continued, Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Deputies received information on a possible location of one of the suspects in this case. They went to a location on West Memorial Highway. When the deputies arrived at the residence, the suspect hid in the woods but was located by the deputies quickly, and taken into custody. This suspect was identified as James Steven Tyler Ginsburg, 19 Years Old, of Lewisville, North Carolina.
On Wednesday, July 21, 2021, Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Investigators continued the investigation and located several witnesses, and seized other evidence. The investigation lead them to the Hallmark Inn located at 2579 Davie Avenue in Statesville. Two suspects had been staying at this location. Suspect information was verified by the manager. Investigators then applied for a search warrant for the suspect room. The search warrant was then executed at the motel. Investigators entered the room and located almost all of the property which had been stolen from the residence in Mooresville.
Investigators were able to identify a third suspect as, Cameron Michael Smith, 19 Years Old, of Union Grove. He was taken into custody without incident at a location in Union Grove.
As a result of this investigation, James Steven Tyler Ginsburg was arrested on Tuesday, July 21, 2021. He was taken to the Iredell County Detention Center where he was charged with: Two Counts of Felony Larceny of Motor Vehicle. He appeared before Magistrate M. Nethken who issued a 40,000.00 dollar secured bond on these charges.
On Wednesday, July 22, 2021, Janes Steven Tyler Ginsburg was charged with the additional charges of: Two Counts of Felony Breaking and Entering, Two Counts of Felony Larceny after Break and Enter, Felony Larceny of Motor Vehicle, Felony Obtaining Property by False Pretense, Felony Possession of Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Two Counts of Misdemeanor Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. Ginsburg appeared before Magistrate R. Imes who issued a 150,000.00 dollars secured bond on these new charges.
Cameron Michael Smith was arrested on Tuesday, July 21, 2021, and charged with: Felony Breaking and Entering, Felony Larceny after Break and Enter, Felony Larceny of Motor Vehicle. Smith received a 15,000.00 dollars secured bond from Magistrate P. Tutterrow.
Through statements and additional evidence, Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Investigators were able to identify two additional juveniles involved in this incident. Juvenile Petitions will be submitted to Juvenile Services for Felony and Misdemeanor charges on all three juvenile suspects
This case is still under investigation, and additional charges could be forthcoming. Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Patrol Deputies, and Criminal Investigators were able to recover vehicles and property worth over 200,000.00 dollars, and return it to the victims throughout this investigation.
