Sheriff Darren Campbell stated on March 16, 2021 a report was filed with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office concerning a victim who had been sexually assaulted. This investigation was assigned to Detective J. Wabel of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Special Victim’s Unit.
The victim, who was a juvenile at the time of the assault, was interviewed and disclosed information about the suspect Charles Irvin Wiles having sexually assaulted the victim in 2007.
Detective Wabel conducted several follow up interviews, and collected additional evidence. Based on the evidence gathered, the sexual assaults occurred at several locations throughout Iredell County including inside the City Limits of Statesville. The Statesville Police Department was notified and also began an investigation into Wiles.
As a result of this investigation, Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Detective Jena Wabel applied for and received, three felony warrants for the arrest of Charles Irvin Wiles.
Charles Irvin Wiles was arrested on Tuesday, May 18, 2021 in Rowan County on, Two Counts of Felony First Degree Sexual Offense, and Felony Indecent Liberties with a Child. He was given a 50,000.00 dollar secured bond on these charges from Detective Wabel. In addition, Wiles was served with four additional Counts of First Degree Sexual Offense stemming from the Statesville Police Department’s investigation. He received a 150,000.00 dollar secured bond on these charges.
