Sheriff Darren Campbell stated On August 14, 2015 Deputy David Price and Deputy Craig Bess from the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit arrested Carlin Powell in reference to outstanding warrants from the state of Ohio.
Powell is also a registered sex offender who was living in Iredell County. Deputy Price was contacted by Investigators out of the Cleveland, Ohio Cold Case/CODIS Unit in reference to three cold case rapes in Ohio that they were working on dating back to 1995. Ohio Investigators advised Iredell deputies that Powell’s DNA had matched the suspect DNA in all three cold cases in Ohio, and they had obtained warrants for him for Rape, Sexual Assault, and Kidnapping.
Ohio Detectives arrived in Iredell County on August 13, 2015 to take part in Powell’s apprehension. Deputies Price and Bess located Powell at his residence on Wilmington Ave. and took him into custody without incident. Powell was transported to the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office where he was interviewed by Ohio Investigators.
After the interview was concluded, Powell was arrested and placed into the Iredell County Detention Center and was charged with an Out of State Fugitive Warrant. Powell was presented to the magistrate where he was placed under a 2.5 million dollar bond.
Powell is being held at the Iredell County Detention Center – awaiting extradition by the state of Ohio for their charges.
